The Reimagining WHY Learning Collaborative

Reimagining WHY is a learning collaborative which invites hospitals leaders to challenge the status quo and rethink, reimagine, and redesign the healthcare workforce. The collaborative meets virtually the third Wednesday every other month from 11am-12:30pm and features guest speakers from hospitals implementing innovative best practices in SC and beyond.     • Description: Guest speakers from the Medical University of South Carolina and Prisma Health Laurens and Hillcrest share effective ways to listen and respond to worker needs that equip, empower, and elevate the voice of their workforce.

    • Description: In this Reimagining WHY session, we explore "Protection from Harm," and how to address basic employee needs like safety and security. Just as healthcare providers have an obligation to "first, do no harm," employers have an obligation to protect their workforce from harm by prioritizing workplace physical and psychological safety, enabling adequate rest and recovery, normalizing and supporting mental health, and operationalizing DEIA norms, policies, and programs, etc. This session features the following guest speakers to highlight the work they are doing to promote protection from physical and mental harm among the healthcare workforce:

    Description: Guest speaker Taylor Warren, Director of Organizational Resiliency with Novant Health, shares about the health system’s journey to build a peer support network in the early days of COVID, how the program has evolved over time, and how it helps to sustain and drive the culture.

    Description: Guest speaker Charity Gerald, Director of Recruiting and Workforce Development with McLeod Health, discusses the ways that McLeod Health ensures their employees know that they matter at work and tools they employ to listen to their workforce. These strategies include employee engagement scores, flexible scheduling, employee recognition, nursing transformation work, and updating HR policies to align with the modern workforce.

    Description: Administrative burden and workflow inefficiencies are top drivers of healthcare worker stress, frustration, and burnout. Guest speaker Christina Bowen, MD, Chief Wellbeing Officer for ECU Health and Medical Director for the Outer Banks Health Center for Healthy Living shares how ECU Health has worked to alleviate administrative burden and enhance efficiency of practice for their providers, APP's, and other clinical staff to improve both the patient and clinician experience. GROSS is a simple and flexible framework that can be used by any healthcare organization, in any unit or department, to minimize time spent on non-essential tasks so clinicians can focus on patient care.

    Description:The AI revolution is upon us, reaching facets of our everyday lives. Healthcare is ripe for an overhaul, but the journey of transformation will require curious, courageous and informed healthcare leaders. This session reviews the history of AI in healthcare, why it’s becoming essential today and showcases examples of how AI-driven workflows in workforce management can improve efficiency and enhance patient care. Additionally, attendees learn best practices on how to prepare, start and support the journey of workforce digitization in their health systems. 

     Guest speaker Dani Bowie, Senior Vice President of Workforce AI with Qualivis/Aya Healthcare, discusses:  

    • An overview of AI and the opportunities it presents in healthcare,

    • How AI can transform workforce management to support frontline leaders with recruiting, hiring and scheduling, and

    • The foundational strategies of implementing AI, including organizational planning and technological gap analysis.

Virtual Nursing/VirtuALLY

The workforce shortage and its impact on quality and safety metrics were high areas of concern in a southeastern acute care community hospital. A Virtual Care Partners (VCP) Program pilot was proposed for one of the medical-surgical level units.  The purpose of this pilot quality improvement project was to examine the effect of the Virtual Care Partners program on discharge time, length of stay, and readmissions.
