Empowering the Future: Spartanburg Regional Wins Award for Workforce Development

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Sept. 29, 2025) – Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's innovative efforts to train the next generation of healthcare workers drew top talent honors during OneSpartanburg Inc.’s recent annual celebration.

Last week, the event brought together community partners across many sectors to recognize the momentum and dedication of leaders and local businesses.

“Our community has a lot to be proud of, and it’s thanks to committed public and private partners coming together with a collaborative spirit like nowhere else,” said OneSpartanburg Inc. President and CEO Allen Smith.

Kathy Sinclair, Spartanburg Regional’s chief human resources officer, was honored with the first Talent Champion Award for her leadership in increasing work-based learning opportunities and securing internships for high school students. The program has expanded work-based learning opportunities countywide.

Her leadership helped 87 high-school students in all seven Spartanburg County public school districts to earn internships with the healthcare system.

With healthcare systems nationwide facing staffing challenges, Spartanburg Regional’s proactive approach toward workforce development serves as a model for others seeking to build sustainable talent pipelines.

Students completed work-based learning internships this summer across 22 different departments within the healthcare system, completing nearly 8,000 service hours. This generated an estimated economic impact of more than $177,000.

“Interns gained firsthand experience in patient care, administrative support and healthcare operations, offering them a unique glimpse into the dynamic world of health care,” said Shelly McMillan, system director of professional practice, innovation and workforce development. “The program is a cornerstone of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s commitment to workforce pipeline development. By engaging students early, Spartanburg Regional helps them explore career options, build professional skills and connect with mentors who guide their journey.”

Many interns have expressed interest in pursuing careers in nursing, pharmacy and medical technology. Twenty-one percent have already applied for entry level positions with Spartanburg Regional.

During internships, each student was paired with a department to help foster meaningful relationships and receive guidance on career planning, professionalism and educational pathways.

Students also participated in structured professional development sessions designed to enhance their readiness for healthcare careers. Topics included professional dress, interview skills, communication techniques, proper social media use and resume development.

Ninety-three percent of interns stated they are “very likely” to pursue a career in health care – a testament to the program’s impact.

The internship program is one of several Spartanburg Regional programs designed to train future workers.

Spartanburg Regional also offers additional programs for aspiring healthcare workers, including its High School to Healthcare program — a one-week learning intensive camp for students to focus on career exploration and hands-on activities. 100 students attended the High School to Healthcare Camp over two weeks during the summer.

Spartanburg Regional has also spearheaded an ongoing certified nursing assistant work-based learning partnership with three local high school career centers: Daniel Morgan Career Center, R.D. Anderson Career Center and Swofford Career Center.

As leaders look ahead to 2026, Spartanburg Regional remains committed to nurturing future healthcare leaders and ensuring a resilient, skilled workforce for years to come.
